MTAG is holding a family friendly protest rally, bringing together Melbourne’s inner west
communities alarmed at Transurban’s unfiltered vent stacks on the West Gate Tunnel.
Sunday 2 March – 11am-12pm Yarraville Gardens
Speakers at the rally include:
• Mayors of Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay – Pradeep Tiwari and Daria Kellander
• MP David Ettershank – Member for Western Metropolitan Region
• Associate Professor Vicki Kotsirilos AM – Doctors for the Environment.
• MTAG President and Maribyrnong Citizen of the Year – Martin Wurt
• Footscray’s Snuff Puppets will entertain the crowd.
The west has long been Melbourne’s dumping ground for toxic industries along with
millions of trucks servicing the Port of Melbourne. The inner west has some of the
highest rates of asthma, lung cancer, stroke and heart disease in Australia – diseases
which have a strong correlation to air pollution. Children in the City of Maribyrnong
already have hospital admission rates for respiratory illness 70% above the Victorian
average.
The tunnel’s promised truck bans on residential streets may get trucks off our streets –
but without filtration, communities in Footscray, Seddon, Yarraville, Sth Kingsville,
Altona North, Newport and Spotswood will continue to breathe toxic fumes for decades.
Bring your family, bring a friend, together let’s send a clear message that the west deserves clean air!
