Luke Donellan, Minister for Roads, Road Safety and Ports announced the start of the new Somerville Rd and Moore St curfews on Thursday morning and switched on the new signs. Also in attendance was Member for Williamstown Wade Noonan, Mayor Nam Quach, CEO of the VTA Peter Anderson, Greens MP Colleen Hartland and Adam Maguire, Regional Director, Metro North West at VicRoads.

It was great to hear the minister acknowledge the work of MTAG in his speech to the media. These curfews are just a small step but a step in the right direction and will give some relief to almost 2000 school children as well as long suffering Moore St residents. We know that most residents in the inner west are still massively impacted by excessive truck traffic and MTAG will continue to advocate for the whole of the inner west. Ultimately we need infrastructure to support Australia’s busiest port and we will continue to work with State Government and Council to see this delivered with best possible outcomes for residents.

MTAG would like to acknowledge the work of the Maribyrnong Council, in particular, Grant Miles, who gave a clear commitment to deliver on the truck issue and saw his promise through. We’d also like to thank Wade Noonan for keeping the issue front and centre with the new Labor Government as well as Colleen Hartland for her ongoing support and tireless work in the community. We’d also like to thank John Merritt CEO of VicRoads for bringing MTAG and industry together to achieve this outcome, as well as Peter Anderson and Brad Close of the VTA for graciously coming to the table and being willing to listen to our concerns.

And of course a huge thanks to our dedicated supporters – who have turned up to protest, ‘slept’ on Moore St, written letters, signed petitions and never given up. Onwards!
