On 14th November Melissa Horne MP and Katie Hall MP announced that Williamstown Rd will be getting a night and weekend curfew once the West Gate Tunnel opens! It will be enforced by cameras and is an actual proper weekend curfew from 8pm Friday night to 6am Monday morning!

It’s been a long 10 year community campaign for Willy Rd ever since the West Gate Tunnel was announced, including:

  • Two protests
  • A major submission to the EES process that focussed on Willy Rd (and filtration)
  • Meetings with council to encourage them to advocate for Willy Rd
  • Working with Save Willy Rd who began in 2019
  • Years of media – print, tv and radio
  • Participation in the Millers Rd/Williamstown Rd Corridor study (what a joke that was)
  • Working with the Victorian Transport Association to get a night and weekend curfew in 2019 (shelved by Gov at the 11th hour).

And finally a breakthrough – a night and weekend curfew for Willy Rd. Community campaigning does pay off – eventually!

We do acknowledge that it’s still bittersweet when the other streets are getting full bans, but it’s a huge step forward. Here’s to quieter nights and safer weekends. Thank you to every single person that has lobbied government for this!  Thanks also goes to Melissa Horne MP, Katie Hall MP and Peter Anderson of the VTA,

The curfew win was reported in The Age, Channel 7, ABC Radio and the Star Weekly.
